Biography

Amy Twomey is a Texas-based painter whose work weaves together storytelling, memory, and a sense of place through layered, intuitive mark-making. Her compositions often gesture toward landscape, personal narrative, and familiar icons, yet remain expansive enough for viewers to interpret on their own terms.

Twomey’s approach is rooted firmly in process. Instead of planning toward a finished image, she lets each painting evolve in response to the moments happening on the canvas—what’s appearing, disappearing, or pressing forward. Imperfection, erasure, and subtle shifts become central to the work, giving her paintings a sense of lived time and layered experience.

Drawing inspiration from the icons and atmospheres of West Texas and the broader Southwest, as well as the emotional resonance of everyday life, Twomey balances instinct with restraint. Her paintings invite a slower pace of looking, encouraging viewers to enter the work and bring their own stories rather than search for a single, definitive reading. Her practice has often been described as a contemporary form of spiritual folk art.
