DECLARATIONS OF FREEDOM
Fort Works Art had the pleasure of hosting “Declarations of Freedom,” the first inaugural exhibition of The National Juneteenth Museum, exhibiting artists across the United States, as well as a few items from their personal collection. The museum is set to open in 2026.
“Declarations of Freedom," a group exhibition in partnership with the National Juneteenth Museum, explores how artists use their practices to assert an unfettered and ever-evolving engagement with history and culture. Focused on contemporary art and selected works from the NJM’s permanent collection, “Declarations of Freedom” is designed to reflect the multifaceted nature of liberation, exploring themes including reclaiming history through revisited narratives, forging new communities, chronicling a transformative hundred-year journey, and telling powerful stories of liberation.
The works in “Declarations of Freedom” oscillate between a retelling of history, a preservation of culture, and an acknowledgment of self. To proclaim is an external invocation from a position of power; to declare is a personal manifestation of power. This exhibition festures an exceptional lineup of contemporary artists, including Assandre Jean-Baptiste, Peter H. Feresten, Letitia Huckaby, Sedrick Huckaby, Vicki Meek, Spencer Evans, ann johnson, Robert Hodge, Phillip Pyle II, and more.
